Danny’s Fitness Journey

My journey started in 2005 when I decided I didn’t like what I saw in the mirror. It wasn’t just how I looked, it was my whole life. Smoking, drinking, gambling, lazy, unmotivated, not happy with my job, eating a diet that was pretty much 100% junk food and trying to squeeze into 38” waist  jogging bottoms that I never did any exercise in (having been a lanky natural ectomorph a few years earlier).
I can’t remember the exact moment I decided to change but I bought some weights and read up as much as I could. In the early days I was adamant that I didn’t want to change my diet, so I didn’t – I remember doing sit ups whilst eating a multipack of crisps trying to get a six pack (I kid you not I think I had about 15 or 16 packets of crisps – I’ve always had a big appetite!)

However, despite these early mistakes, through a gradual process of trial and error and learning the right things to do, after about 20 months I managed to make some decent progress.

In 2007 I went back to study business and management psychology and ended up as an HE lecturer in Organisational Behaviour. This was the start of what I consider to be my journey to becoming a personal trainer.

Fast forward six years to 2012-2013 (and probably over a thousand gym sessions) a few life changing events took their toll and I ended up on medication for anxiety (I’m still on the meds – citalopram – today). Through a series of coincidences and the help that the medication gave me I took the decision to become a PT and got my first clients.

My first foray into the world of Personal Training was basically me and a pair of dumbbells on the bench in the boot of my old Vauxhall Astra. The set up was simple and things needed refining but right from the start we were getting results Everything I’d learnt studying and teaching psychology combined with my own experiences trying to keep fit whilst navigating life‘s ups and downs was proving an ideal schooling to help other people.

My client list was growing so in 2015 I took the decision to open a studio so I could spend more time coaching and less time driving from client to client. Fast forward two years (2017) and I opened a bigger studio and took on our first coaches.

Today we are in the process of moving to another studio that is double the size of our current premises and we are recruiting expand the Reach coaching team.

Throughout this 12 year period there has been one thing that has remained consistent – trying to integrate health and fitness into real life, not a stage competition. My personal journey, like most people’s life, has been filled up with ups and downs, family, kids and work. I didn’t just become a PT at 18, having played sport throughout my teens – I had to make a huge transformation in my mindset and my actions, which helped me to change my body, my health and my self-esteem.

The learning and experience of my own journey, combined with the privilege of working with other people to help them achieve their goals, has underpinned everything that we do at Reach right now and is the reason why are able to help people to get such amazing results.

We are real people, with real lives, working towards sustainable, long-term results.
